Acids, retinol and scrubs together? Simplify your active routine
Go beyond asking whether ingredients can mix. Identify what each step does and whether your skin tolerates the complete routine.

In this guide
Individually gentle does not mean gentle in combination
The AAD’s exfoliation guidance advises considering current medicines and skincare. Some already increase sensitivity, and added exfoliation may worsen dryness or irritation. Separate gentle claims from different brands do not establish that the combination will suit you.

Map purposes before compatibility
| The step | The first question to ask |
|---|---|
| Exfoliating cleanser or toner | Does another product already perform this exfoliating role? |
| Retinol or other targeted care | What is the current goal, and has frequency recently changed? |
| Scrub, cleansing mask or brush | Was this added because the skin did not feel clean enough? |
| Repair care | Is moisturisation actually needed, or is this intended to offset earlier overuse? |
Focus on the concern that matters most first
Trying to fade marks, control oil, smooth texture and reduce signs of ageing simultaneously can lead to one bottle for each goal. The AAD’s anti-ageing advice emphasises one main concern and realistic expectations. Our extension is to leave secondary goals for later so the current plan remains practical and assessable.
Discomfort is not a progress bar
Do not use a heavier layer of another product to push through persistent burning, marked redness, itching or peeling. Stop newly added, nonessential irritating steps, return to tolerated care and seek medical help where needed. Do not exfoliate open wounds or sunburn. Ask your doctor about prescribed treatments instead of cancelling them yourself.

You need not restore every removed step later
If a simpler routine feels comfortable and your main goal is still being met, not every old step needs to return. Ask whether the product has a defined role, duplicates something you already use and is worth the added complexity.
Advanced skincare does not necessarily mean ever-higher concentrations. Sometimes it means knowing what need not be done together and when a professional assessment should guide the choice.
Put the information to use
